Emomali Rahmon awarded with jubilee medal “60 Years of UNESCO”

In the afternoon, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received the UNESCO Director-General Mrs. Irina Bokova.

At the beginning of the meeting Irina Bokova decorated head of Tajik state Emomali Rahmon with medal of “60 Years of UNESCO”. In the official message of UNESCO it reads in particular: “In recognition of deep commitment to the goals of building lasting peace and fostering sustainable development, including through initiatives to promote water cooperation and international dialogue, share scientific knowledge and advance progress towards the Millennium Development Goals and other internationally-agreed development goals, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is pleased to honor His Excellency, Emomali Rahmon, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan with the “60 Years of UNESCO” Jubilee Medal”.

President Emomali Rahmon considered it of honor to be awarded with such authoritative medal and stated that “I deem it first of all as a result of consistent efforts and labor of the whole, ancient and civilized people of Tajikistan in the path to founding and strengthening the foundations of the newest statehood and enhancing its prestige on the international arena”.

Irina Bokova was also thanked for visiting Tajikistan and taking part in the High Level International Conference on Water Cooperation.

With reference to 20-year history of cooperation with UNESCO, it was stressed with satisfaction that over this period a series of important projects in the spheres of education, science, protection of historical monuments and intangible legacy have been implemented in Tajikistan.

It was mentioned with gratification about the holding of International Symposium of Performers of Classical Music “Shashmaqom”, introduction of the 1150th anniversary of founder of Tajik-Persian literature Abuabdulloi Rudaki to the List of UNESCO anniversaries, including of ancient settlement Sarazm to the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage Sites and National Park of Tajikistan-Mountains of Pamir to the List of World Heritage of UNESCO.

Moreover, it was expressed confidence that other programmes and initiatives proposed by Tajikistan will be also supported. In particular, the necessity of establishment of UNESCO International Fund for Saving Glaciers in Tajikistan, organization and holding of the 3rd expedition to the mountains of Pamir and introduction of the 3000th anniversary of Hissor town to the UNESCO List of Anniversaries in 2015 has been highlighted.

Head of state Emomali Rahmon, referring to the possibility and interest of Tajikistan in participation in the International Hydrological Programme of UNESCO, stated that “we can promote the water issues in its main structure more fruitfully and actively”. In connection with this subject, it was proposed to establish with the assistance of UNESCO a National Committee on Hydrological Issues under the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan.
