Meeting with members of European Parliament

Today the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received the delegation of members of European Parliament who have arrived in Dushanbe under the leadership of Struan Stevenson.

The issues of fruitful cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union have been discussed at the meeting.

It was expressed satisfaction over the high level and consistency of bilateral, regional and international cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union.

It has been underlined that Tajikistan and the European Union can in partnership and solidarity play an effective role in addressing many problems of Central Asia and Afghanistan.

The members of the European Parliament with reference to “an important role of Tajikistan in this region of strategic significance” stressed that the European Union will consistently facilitate the strengthening of protection of borders with Afghanistan with a view to preventing spread of threats of terrorism, extremism and illegal drug trafficking and increase its technical assistance.

Much attention was focused on the socio-economic development of the regional countries and revival of tranquil life in Afghanistan through its economic reconstruction. It was expressed confidence that the broad realization of hydropower potential and resources of Tajikistan and linking the electricity power networks of Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, including through the high-tension power transmission line CASA-1000 will be for the benefit of an entire region. Both sides welcomed an international support for the efforts of the regional countries and donor countries and organizations in the way of linking transport networks of the countries of Central Asia and South Asia.

An exchange of views has also been held regarding other issues of mutual interest.
