Celebration of the 5500th anniversary of the ancient city of Sarazm

The Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon attended events to mark the 5500th anniversary of the ancient city of Sarazm in Panjakent as part of his working visit to Sughd Province. The 5500th Anniversary of the ancient city of Sarazm has been included in the UNESCO Anniversaries List for the years 2020-2021.

Among the guests invited to attend the festive event were members of the Government, heads of regional executive authorities, representatives of academics, cultural figures, civic organisations and heads and staff of Dushanbe – based diplomatic missions.

UNESCO Director-General Mrs. Audrey Azoulay and ISESCO Director-General Dr. Salim bin Mohammed Al-Malik attended and spoke at the 5.500th Anniversary of Sarazm through video-conference.

While visiting proto-urban site of Sarazm, which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in July 2010 as "an archaeological site bearing testimony to the development of human settlements in Central Asia", President Emomali Rahmon inaugurated 27-meter-tall Sarazm symbol and two gates 12 meters wide and 45 meters high and width of 13 m and a height of 8 meters, respectively.

The Proto-urban Site of Sarazm has the legal status of a “Historical and Archaeological Reserve,” as defined by the resolutions of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan No 391 of 21 September 2000 and No 198 of 19 April 2001.

Sarazm is a unique site of the Eneolithic and Bronze Ages in Central Asia, which covers the period from the 4th to the 3rd millennia BCE and in some regions up to the 2nd millennium BCE and during this period Tajik civilization, handicrafts and urban planning were formed.

Before taking part in 5.500th anniversary celebration event, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon took part in the opening ceremonies of Central Hospital and Sarazm Plaza Hotel built in line with the modern requirements. The six-story hotel is a vivid evidence to the work done in Period of Rural Development, Tourism and Folk Crafts 2019-2021. He also met with 30 orphans and children from vulnerable families and presented them with cash aid and clothes.

In addition, President Rahmon inspected the dried fruit processing plant in Ma’rifatparvar Open Joint Stock Company of the Tajik State Pedagogical Institute in Panjakent, which is expected to dry up to three tons of healthy fruits and vegetables per day.

The inspection of the Marmari Sarazm Enterprise, which produce travertine building materials, was completely reconstructed and renovated by CJSC Somon Sughd followed the list.

The Marmari Sarazm Enterprise has been operating since 1995 with the huge reserves of Tillogul marble deposit in Farobi village of Panjakent. Due to the remoteness of the road, access to raw materials from this area has been difficult in the following years and its activities were suspended.

As part of the declaring of the fourth national goal, i.e. rapid industrialization of the country, the Marmari Sarazm Enterprise has resumed its activity.

Visiting the Rohi Abreshim Farming, President Rahmon visited Exhibition of Agricultural Products which showcased local products and achievements in the agriculture sector. He also inspected potato harvesting campaign.

The area under crops in all type of agriculture of Panjakent amounted to 28.152 hectares, which is almost 500 hectares more compared to last year, in particular the farmers have sown grain in an area of 14. 473 hectares, potatoes – 6. 623 hectares and 2. 126 hectares of vegetables. The farmers also carried out repeated sowing in an area of 2.220 hectares, including 82.3 hectares of potatoes, 300 hectares of cereals and 315 hectares of vegetables.

As of September 1, 2009, 225 tons of corn, 59,856 tons of potatoes, 43,075 tons of vegetables, 12.5 tons of fruits and 732 tons of grapes has been produced in all types of farms, which is more compared to the same period of last year.

During the current year alone, 15 hectares of new orchards and vineyards have been planted. Also 93 hectares of old orchards and vineyards have been restored, while the volume of healthy fruit production has increased.

Rohi Abreshim Farming has 1460 hectares of land, specializing in growing of vegetables, and its harvest is annually exported to foreign markets.

Next in the schedule was the launching of the three-story secondary educational institution No: 72 in Sarazm Township that accommodates for 1.280 students in two shifts meeting modern international standards.

Following familiarization with the conditions created in school, President Rahmon attended the unveiling ceremony of the regional branch of the Agency for State Financial Control and Combating Corruption in Zarafshan valley at Loiq Sherali street of Panjakent.
