Participation and address at the general session of the UN Conference on sustainable development

Today, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon attended and spoke at the general session of the UN Conference on sustainable development, which has been initiated in Rio-de-Janeiro of Brazil.

It should be noted that the Conference has been opened by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The Conference unanimously chose the President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff as the president of Conference and President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon as one of her deputies.

Then from among more than 140 heads of state and government of countries all over the world, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon was the first to speak at the Conference.

In his speech the Head of State Emomali Rahmon paid particular attention to National Development Strategy based on the MDGs, the crux of which consists of three main issues – achieving energy independence, overcoming transport and communication deadlock and ensuring food security of the country.

As the Tajik President accentuated, according to this Strategy the effective and economical use of natural resources, which embody the main element of “green economy”, as well as the enhancement of social sector and protection of ecological system are the component of reforms realized in Tajikistan.

“Comprehensive access to modern energy service, increasing energy efficiency, expanding use of renewable energy sources are the most important issues of sustainable development”, - stated Emomali Rahmon.

During his address the Head of State Emomali Rahmon expressed support of Tajikistan to the initiative of the UN Secretary-General “Sustainable energy for all”.

According to the President of Tajikistan, “use of hydropower fully corresponds with the conception of “green economy”, which is among the main subjects of Rio+20 Conference agenda.

In connection with the great role of cooperation in sphere of water resources with the view of achievement of development goals, Emomali Rahmon particularly mentioned about the declaration of 2013 as “International Year of Water Cooperation” by the UN General Assembly at the initiative of Tajikistan.

Moreover, the Head of State Emomali Rahmon drew the attention of the floor to three intimately related ecological, economic and social issues – climate change, natural disasters and sustainable development of mountainous districts. He voiced hope that the international institutions and donor countries will support the proposal of Tajikistan on the establishment of an International Fund for Protection of Glaciers.
